Men with FM have negative experiences with physical and mental health, quality of life, relationships, and careers as a result of FM. Interactions with health-care providers were deterred by potential for misdiagnosis or dismissal of symptoms, stigma of having a condition primarily affecting women, differences in treatment of men and women with FM, and need for health education resources.

Women outlive men in all but 2 of 229 countries. In Lesotho and South Sudan, life expectancy is the same between males and females. The data presented is irrespective of race, ethnicity, or level of country development. In 175 of 227 countries where women outlive men, the gap exceeds 4 years, and the gap exceeds 10 years in 3 of 175. Worldwide, women, on average, live 4.2 years longer than men.
